The statistics are compiled and it is official – Quebec is experiencing a baby boom.

According to the Quebec Ministry of Family and Seniors, there were at least 88 600 babies born in Quebec territories during 2009. Even if the birth rate slows, Quebec has almost reached the record of 1.74 children per woman set in 1976 – a record year. Still, the birth rate must rise to 2.1 babies per woman for the Quebec population maintain itself.

For more information, consult the Coup d`oeil socio-démographique published by Institut de la statistique du Québec, issue number 3 published April 6, 2010. It can be found online by clicking here.

Statistics aside, it is important to make informed and safe choices in raising our precious children. From room paints and clothing to diapers and bottles our children deserve the best for their health and well being. To learn more, visit the following link: Click here

The bedroom

To prepare for baby`s arrival, a little interior decorating goes a long way to creating a warm environment all their own. The best paints to use are water based latex without volatile organic compounds (VOC).

There are many paints available on the market that are marketed as environmentally friendly, but in Quebec, recycled paints are leading the pack. Boomerang recycled paints are produced by Peinture récupérées du Québec Inc. in Victoriaville, they just recently renamed themselves Laurentides Re-sources. They are the only paint recycler in Quebec and have been in the business since 1992. To learn more, follow this link:

Assorted baby equipment

When it comes to the equipment that you just can’t do without – why not follow a 3 R philosophy.

Reduce: do I really need this item? Friends and family like to give gifts when a new baby arrives, by being proactive and telling people what you need ahead of time – you will reduce wasteful consumption.

Reuse: as much as possible. Instead of traditional baby shower gifts, asked for pre-loved items that have been perhaps discarded. I know of one mother where the most cherished baby shower gifts were the return of gifts given by her deceased mother-in-law from children who had grown out of a handmade sweater and a specific bedtime story.

Recycle: once your baby is potty-trained, your washable diapers can have a second life. You can also find toys made entirely of recycled materials. For more information on recycling washable diapers visit La Mère Hélène who participates in the CASIRA project:
